Homemade Meat Replacements

While there are plenty of meatless options available for purchase, making your own can be satisfying and nutritious. From produce to beans, there are numerous choices to meet your dietary needs. Below I highlight some of my favorite substitutes and how I use them (and how well they pair with potatoes obviously).

Mushrooms

Mushrooms are my go-to most of the time. First of all, they’re delicious. Second, there are so many varieties. Portobellos, oysters, and baby bellas are easy to find and can be served on their own or can be added to a veggie patty.

cauliflower

These florets are a great replacement because they can easily take on flavors. This veggie can be fried, roasted, or sliced. Toss in a tasty sauce for extra flavor.

jackfruit

Before I changed my diet, I had never heard of jackfruit. Now it’s one of my favorites based on the texture and versatility. It can replace chicken, beef, or seafood. Young jackfruit in the can is ideal for making your next entree.

lentils

Brown and green lentils are the perfect base for veggie balls and patties. Once cooked, soft lentils can be mashed or mixed with other veggies for a hearty meat replacement. It’s a bonus that they’re full of fiber.
