Plant-based Adventures: New York City

Food options: 5/5

Restaurants visited: Modern Love Brooklyn, Jajaja, Confectionery!, Champs Diner, Screamers Pizzeria, Little Choc Apothecary, Taco Dumbo, The Cinnamon Snail

My list of restaurants to visit was ridiculous – 20 places in 3 days!! I knew I could never make it to all of them, but I had so much fun trying. I found everything I wanted and things I didn’t know I needed on this quick getaway.

Our first stop was Modern Love Brooklyn, and it was perfect for an intimate dinner date. We ordered all the things I had been drooling over on Instagram.

Mozzarella Sticks

Sun-dried Tomato & Walnut Chorizo Nachos

Hen of the Woods Picatta

I knew good things were in store when I found Jajaja by a sign saying, “Tacos are for Lovers.” It was accurate. I was in love with the quesadillas. I really wanted there to be leftovers to enjoy later, but I just couldn’t stop.

Coconut Queso Quesadilla with King Oyster Mushrooms

Tacos with House-made Chorizo

Guacamole and Chips

After seeing gorgeous macarons and sweets posted on the Confectionery! Instagram feed, I knew I could not miss this place. I thought I was impressed by the pictures; I was blown away when I was there in person. There were beautiful sweets on display, and then there were these macaron ice cream sandwiches that took things to the next level.

Macaron Case

Strawberry Crumble Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich

Long list and short window of time meant that I had to identify some absolutely must visit locations. Champs Diner was at the top of this list because of the mozzarella sticks that I had liked far too many pictures of. I was not disappointed and could not believe the portion sizes.

Mozzarella Sticks

Cauliflower Poboy

New York and pizza are synonymous, so of course, I had to get some slices while I was there. The scent was heavenly when I walked into Screamers Pizzeria. I seriously loved pizza before changing my diet, and I haven’t encountered many place that do vegan pizza well since. I’m overjoyed that such a place exists, and there are so many options. I could have stayed there all night, but there was more food to meet.

NY Slices with House-made Almond Cheese

I have enjoyed sweet crepes before, but I didn’t know I needed savory crepes in my life. Previously, I wasn’t one to venture beyond what I already knew, so I had actually never had a savory crepe before eating at Little Choc Apothecary, NYC’s 1st 100% vegan crêperie. So light yet filling – it made me a believer.

Burrito Crepe

Jacked Up Crepe

Vegan tacos are fairly easy to find, but an Impossible Taco led me to Taco Dumbo. The first time I had an Impossible Burger was fascinated with how closely this tasted to a burger. I had the same experience with this taco. I just wish I had had room for more than one.

Impossible Taco

Last stop by before catching the train home was The Cinnamon Snail. I had only planned to pick up some sweets for the ride but somehow I ended up with jalapeño mac and cheese as well. There were no complaints from me.

Unicorn Raspberry Cheesecake Donut

Jalapeño Mac and Cheese

My feet were tired from walking about 12 miles a day, and my belly was stuffed. It was all worth it, and I would do it again a heartbeat.
